Introduction
to Cultural Competency (1-2 hours)
Brief workshop designed to give participants an introduction to the kinds
of conflicts and misunderstandings that can result from cultural differences.
A variety of ethnic and religious groups are touched upon.
Working
in a Culturally Diverse Workforce
(1-3 hours)
Workshop addresses common problems that arise when employees (eg., physicians,
nurses, aides, etc.) of different ethnic backgrounds work together. It
is designed to help staff understand the behavior of their African-American,
Anglo-American, Asian-American, Latino, and Middle-Eastern co-workers
and to help improve working relationships. Workshops of at least two hours
include small group interaction and is recommended.
Caring
for Patients from Different Cultures (2-4 hours)
Workshop looks at the kinds of cultural differences that can cause conflicts
and misunderstandings between health care providers and hospital patients.
Program focuses on four major cultural groups: African-Americans, Asian-Americans,
Latinos, and Middle-Easterners, and suggests how to provide culturally
appropriate care.
Caring
for Patients from Different Cultures (full-day)
The workshop is a highly interactive program which guides the participants
to understanding the kinds of cultural differences that can cause conflicts
and misunderstandings among health care personnel and hospital patients.
The program focuses on Anglo-Americans, Asians, Hispanics, African Americans
and Middle Easterners. It emphasizes understanding peoples' behavior and
avoiding conflicts and misunderstandings through knowledge of their cultural
values, family structure, healthcare beliefs & practices, religious beliefs,
diet, language & communication processes, and psychosocial interactions
Introduction to American Hospitals for
Foreign-born Physicians & Nurses (1-4 hours) **NEW**
This workshop is designed to introduce physicians and nurses from other
countries to the "culture" of the American hospital system. It includes
such concepts as gender equality, the team approach, and what constitutes
"professional" behavior. It also addresses hot-button issues such as
speaking in a native language in the workplace. Suggestions will be given
on how to deal with prejudice on the part of patients.
Health
Care in a Medical Melting Pot (full-day)
This workshop takes a more lecture-oriented approach to discussing the issues
in the "Caring for Patients from Different Cultures" program described
above. It examines the sources of conflict both among members of a culturally
diverse staff, and between staff and patients of different cultures. Program
focuses on Anglo-Americans, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos, and
Middle-Easterners.

Conflict
Resolution **NEW**
A special 2-part workshop, led by Geri-Ann
Galanti, PhD and Karen Michaels, MFT, which focuses on cultural differences
that may lead to conflict
among among healthcare staff. In the first part, case studies are used
for small group active learning. Several tools are presented to repair
damaged
relationships
and avoid future conflicts.
In the second part, ideally a week or two
later, participants discuss their experiences applying concepts
and strategies presented in the first part of the workshop. Additional
strategies for conflict resolution are presented.
Diet
(1 hour)
This brief workshop will provide an introduction to the cultural aspects
of diet. This includes concepts of body balance, seasonal appropriateness
of food, food preferences, food prohibitions, the "meaning" of food and
food deprivation, and the appropriate way to eat. Cultures which will
be emphasized are Asians, Hispanics, and Middle Easterners. Also included
are Hindus, Jews, Mormons, Moslems, and Seventh Day Adventists.
End
of Life (4 hours)
An overview is provided of several cultures (including African-American,
Asian-American, Latino, and Middle-Eastern) and religions (including
Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam,
and Judaism) with specific reference to their beliefs and behaviors regarding
death and dying. Topics covered include response to pain, folk remedies, attitudes
toward death and the dying, afterlife beliefs, attitudes toward life extension,
euthanasia, organ donations, and autopsies; funeral and mourning practices,
Near-Death-Experiences, and Nearing-Death-Awareness. Also addressed
is the question of what to do when the family does not want the patient
to be given a fatal diagnosis.
Home
Health Care (1-4 hours)
The workshop will examine the kinds of cultural differences that can cause
conflicts and misunderstandings among home health workers, their patients,
and their families. The program will focus on four major culture areas
and two religious groups: African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Middle-Easterners,
Jews, and Moslems. Other groups can be included upon request. The program
emphasizes understanding each group's values and how they influence peoples'
behavior. The 1 hour workshop will provide an introduction and overview;
longer workshops go into more detail and can include small group problem-solving.
Language
& Communication (2 hours)
Conflict and misunderstanding between both staff and patients and among
staff often stems from miscommunication. This workshop examines issues
relating to such things as nonverbal behavior, slang, speaking in one's
native language, and the use/misuse of interpreters.
Management
(2-4 hours)
Workshop examines the kinds of issues that arise when managing a culturally
diverse workforce. It is designed to help managers understand and deal
with the behavior of their African-American, Anglo-American, Asian-American,
Latino, and Middle-Eastern employees.
Mental
Health/Illness (2-4 hours)
Workshop is designed to help mental health practitioners understand the
kinds of psychological and cultural issues that can affect African-Americans,
Asian-Americans, Latinos, and Middle Easterners. Psychological expectations
for a "normal" individual within each culture are contrasted with that
of Anglo-Americans.
Nursing
Homes (4 hours)
One of the biggest problems experienced in the last few years has been
the lack of communication between the resident and care-giver from different
cultures. This workshop will examine how both can start understanding
each other and how better care and communication can be provided to the
skilled nursing facility resident. Cultural differences among care-givers
will also be addressed.
Pain (1 hour)
A look cultural influences
on the expression of pain among various ethnic groups. Issues regarding
pain medication are also covered.
Pregnancy,
Birth, & Women's Health (1-2 hours)
The workshop examines several aspects of pregnancy, birth, and women's
health among African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos, and Middle-Easterners.
Specific topics include pre-natal care, labor & delivery, post-partum
beliefs, birth control, abortion, folk remedies, and male/female roles.
Religion
and Health Care (2 hours)
This workshop focuses on the beliefs and practices of various religious
groups which can affect health care and create conflicts and misunderstandings.
Groups covered include Buddhists, Catholics, Hindus, Jehovah's Witnesses,
Jews, Mormons, Muslims, and Sikhs.
Traditional
Practices (2 hours)
An overview of traditional practices that can result in conflict and misunderstanding.
It includes such topics as diet, folk medicine, and death & dying,
Specific
Ethnic or Religious Groups (1-2 hours)
This workshop is designed to focus on a single ethnic or religious group
and the beliefs and practices that can create conflicts or misunderstandings
in the health care setting. As an alternative, a briefer overview of several
different groups can be given in a two hour format, when combined with
one of the introductory workshops.
